But I do like hearing some of your cocktail ideas for this so keep em coming. Was this a one-off? Were they pumping out swill with less than ideal cuts of the distillate? Should I go ahead and dive back in (provided it's a BiB)? Or just stick to calvados, maybe.ha.Įdit: So it sort of sounds like I probably just got an oddball bottle.so I may venture out and grab a fresh one. I do not want to spend $30-35 on another bottle of poison. I'm vaguely aware that they had some production issues or something in the not-too-distant past, so perhaps my local store had one of these old bottles.Īs winter is upon us and apple brandy cocktails are called for, I'm puzzling over what to do - everyone is staying how great this stuff is and, at 100-proof, it's such a great cocktail ingredient. With a light, natural apple flavor and fragrance that is backed by a hint of vanilla, this brandy has just the right amount of sweetness to make your taste buds dance without being overly sweet, and smooth enough to go down without any kind of after bite. I thought back to when I had grabbed the bottle, I hadn't really looked at it carefully and I realized it didn't carry the Bottled-In-Bond was just 100 proof. No matter how I prepared it and tried to disguise it, it was always there. There was this off, astringent flavor on the back palate that just about made my face pucker and contort. When I did occasion to make a cocktail out of it - it was disgusting. /r/firewater (This one is for distillers!)įollowing recommendations from several sources last year, I procured a bottle of Laird's straight apple brandy (the 100 proof stuff). We've put our favorite content on our wiki including a starter's guide to cocktails, best beginner's cocktail books, and the World Wide Bar Guide! For one I used the 2 T of maple syrup, and for the other I used 1T maple syrup and 1 T apple cider, and they were both winners. It's a GO! Tried one with nutmeg and one with pumpkin pie spice and both were great. I "test drove" this recipe today today to preview it for Thanksgiving. I'd love to just have these ready as guests arrive. Hey, can you give advice on mixing a batch/pitcher of these? Because nothing says "make ahead" more than Thanksgiving. Very nice combination of a little sweet and a little tart. This is now part of our cocktail repertoire!ĭammmmmmn this is delicious! Strain your citrus for a cleaner sip. I have also made this with bourbon when we ran out of applejack (!!) and it’s just as good. I agree with another reviewer that it is good to strain the citrus juice. I love the thought of "test driving" a recipe. This is now a go-to fall cocktail in my house after serving it to family last Thanksgiving. I made this last year after seeing it in the fall issue. In fact, these apple-based spirits perhaps have a greater right to the title as their history of production stretches back to before the country was even founded. Now I just need a coupe glass to enjoy it even more. FebruSave Neither Applejack nor apple brandy is the modern force that bourbon is, but they have just as much claim to being America’s spirit. My fiance and I enjoyed this during our Quarantine Thanksgiving for 2 this year! Really great drink! Tart and well balanced with a nice punch, it's perfect for the fall season. The bottle was drained in less than an hour. I brought this drink to a Thanksgiving dinner in 2019 (pre-COVID times) and my wife told me that we would be the only ones drinking it. Great fall cocktail-I left out the maple syrup as I prefer my cocktails not so sweet :) I just got into mixing drinks and this was my first time using a shaker. Always impresses dinner guests, so good with bourbon barrel maple
